First day in the company in Saudi Arabia

After the arrival to the company usually the passport will be kept by the officers at the personal department and you will be directed to the clinic for the medical test. Even if we got the medical exam passed in Sri Lanka there is another test after the arrival. If we fail from the medical test in Saudi Arabia then most probably we will be sent back home.

After having passed the medical test then our documents will be sent for the Saudi Authorities for the preparation of IQAMA (Identity Card in Saudi). Then time taken for the process depends on the authorities’ decision. It was 2 months for mine and I had to stay in the companies’ accommodation without going outside from the camp.

Sometimes on our request, the personal depart issues a letter in Arabic with the visa copy if we need to go outside. My advice is better not to go outside if there is no one with you who can speak Arabic. Most of the police officers can’t understand even the Arabic.  If we are inspected outside by a police officer and if we don’t have the IQAMA then we will be ended up in the jail. Until an officer from the personal department of your company comes to the police station and get you released. If you don’t have the IQAMA, then don’t go outside until you receive it.

When you receive the IQAMA, check with someone whether job category is correct. It’s not allowed to do any other job other than the job mentioned in the IQAMA.

While the documentation process you will be asked to sign the agreement with company that’s the original one which we sign with the company. Read it very carefully before you sign. Sometimes there are discrepancies and make sure that all the agreed facilities are mentioned there in the agreement.

Some companies date the agreement on the exact date that we left the home country but some companies they change it. If the construction site is located outside the companies’ accommodation most probably you will be asked to stay in the accommodation until you receive the IQAMA. After receiving the IQAMA remember to buy a registered sim card under your name as it will be very important when you are dealing with future activities. Don’t keep a sim card belongs to someone’s IQAMA number because it will trouble you if found by police.

Whenever or wherever you go outside make sure that you have the IQAMA with you.

After landing in Saudi Arabia

This is what I experienced in Saudi Arabia at  King Abdulaziz International Airport - Jeddah

After landing the flight we were transferred to the Immigration counter for the documentation and there were few lines. At the counter they asked to face the camera which is mounted on the counter and also finger prints were scanned. It took more than twenty five minutes for that as they were chatting with other colleagues going here and there while the finger prints were scanned, they were very slow. One of my friends stayed beside the counter for half an hour without knowing any reason. When he asked the officer at the counter he signaled with his fingers that he needs some time but he didn't mention anything because most of the officers do not understand English. It’s very difficult to communicate with them.

After the Immigration process we came to the Baggage area and the bags were thrown here and there my baggage was almost broken and my friend’s baggage wheels were totally broken.

Once the documentation process is over make sure to rush to the baggage area because there is no any authorized officer to take care of.

When we were going there one lady has taken my friends bag and she was yelling at us that’s her bag. After few minutes talking to that lady and helping her to find her bag, then we could sort-out the problem.

All the bags were scanned next to the baggage area.
Make sure any offensive item against the Saudi’s Government will not be allowed to bring outside the airport.

Below are several sources where you can get information.

If you have a companies’ representative waiting at the airport make sure you have his mobile number since it is very difficult find someone there as the airport is always in a rush because of the MAKKAH tourists.

If you are hiring a taxi make sure you exactly know the destination unless they will play with your money.

You can buy a temporary sim card at the airport as there are many workers selling sim cards. Usually you can buy a “Mobily sim card for USD 10.00” and it has a reload of 10 Saudi riyals.

AFTER SELECTION OF A FOREIGN INTERVIEW

Make sure that you are dealing with an agency registered under Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

Check with - http://applications.slbfe.lk/feb/la/la_details.asp?agency=A  (Check whether the validation is expired)

You will be informed after selection of a foreign interview but usually the agencies those are in the real business, only they contact their customers to inform the status of the interview.
After facing an interview definitely we need to follow up the status at least once a day. Sometimes the agencies are dragging their feedback for weeks and more that means the chance to get you selected is low. Better thing is to continue applying and participating for the interviews until you get yourself selected.

1)      Signing a copy of the agreement letter
After the selection you will be informed a date to go to the agency to sign up a copy of an agreement letter and that just only for proceeding the job. Before signing the copy you need to go through the documents that are to be signed and read the content very carefully. Check below details before you sign the document.

Ø  Name of the Employer
Ø  Your name
Ø  Job category
Ø  Working days and hours
Ø  Salary - Mentioned as promised
Ø  Salary – Fixed or Open
Ø  Whether the facilities are provided as promised in the interview
v  Food
v  Accommodation
v  Transport facilities
v  Medical
v  Air tickets
v  Vacation period
Ø  Contract period
Ø  Applicable LAW

If all the details are correct then you can sign the copy of the agreement. If there is any error you should come up with that before signing the copy.

2)      Getting the medical report
After signing the copy, Agency will ask you to go for the medical examination. For Middle East countries it has to be booked on a date and only the approved medical centers for the GCC will be proceeded. In Sri Lanka it cost around Rs. 7,500.00 for a medical report (Rates were applicable for the date of 31/03/2015). It will take up to 3,4 days to get the status of the medical report.

3)      Endorsement of the certificates by Ministry of External – Sri Lanka
If the medical report is o.k then the agency will proceed you with documentation part to get your certificates endorsed by the Ministry of External Affairs ( In Sri Lanka – It’s located in the Cargills building at FORT ). Document charges may vary.
To get the certificates endorsed by the Ministry of External Affairs you need to get two photo copy sets of the certificates needed and have to be authorized by the relevant Institute as “TRUE COPY” and after that you can proceed to the Ministry. It’s better if you take two sets endorsed as true copies, because one set has to be submitted to the agency and one set to keep with you. Sometimes the agency will say that one set is enough and they will give you the copy set that they took after processing with the embassy but they will surely misplace the copies and at the last minute, time is not enough to get another set endorsed. Endorsement will be done on the same date and it’s better if you go to the foreign ministry at least by 7.00 AM in the morning as there are many people who are awaiting there in the queue. The security guard at the front gate will guide you the exact floor to get the application. After the endorsement check whether all the stickers are pasted in the true copy sheet and have the endorsements there.

Check for further details - http://www.mea.gov.lk/

4)      Attesting the certificates by the respective embassy of the destination country
For Saudi embassy its located in Horton place and you should be there before 9.30 AM to get the applications and the certificates will be reviewed by the Embassy’s officials. After their confirmation you will be asked to do the payment and it has to be done in another place at Cotta Road – Castle Street. After the payments you have to get back to the Embassy at the time the official asked you to be there. Usually the certificates can be collected after 3.00 PM on the same day. While handing over one set to the Agency they will proceed it for the application of visa. (Embassy charges - more than Rs.1000.00 for each document.)

5)      Applying for the visa
Some agencies ask for an advance payment for applying the visa and some are not. Usual procedure for applying visa is advance payment method. For some agencies, payment can be done after receiving the visa. It may take up to 3 months or more, it depends on the country you applying, may be within 1 or 2 weeks.

6)      Registration at the Sri Lanka Bureau of  Foreign Employment
Remember that you need to register with Bureau before leaving the country. There you need to pay the government approved charges for the selected job category. Agency will guide you on this. You can get whatever the details from below link.

When you are signing the documents at Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, make sure the salary and the job category is mentioned in the documents are correct.

7)      After receiving the ticket you will be given passport with the visa form pasted.
Day before leaving the country you have to go to the agency to collect your passport as usually the procedure was to release the passport one day before the departure date ( Agency will be allowed to get the passport released by the Bureau one day before the departure date ).

(Kindly note the charges by the relevant authorities were applicable for the date of 29th April 2015.)

certified cost professional (ccp) / certified cost technician (cct)

Recently I came to know about CCP ( certified cost professional ). It's an additional qualification for our carrier in Quantity Surveying.

There is an option for the people who do not meet the requirements of CCP. And the optional route  can be started with CCT ( certified cost technician ).

In Sri Lanka there is a training branch which has been granted the authorization to conduct training programs. All the details are available in the web site. pls click on below link for further details. This is just an information got from my friend and I thought to share it here... so some one can get the use of it if needed.

FOR QUANTITY SURVEYORS – WHEN FACING A FOREIGN INTERVIEW IN SRI LANKA WITH FOREIGN PRINCIPALS.

Most of the foreign interviews are updated in the top jobs web site (this is only for gaining the information and not for promoting the particular web site)
Click on below link for the updates.

1)    After selecting a suitable vacancy, send a CV(updated) to the mentioned email address and make sure to get confirmed over phone that they have received the CV because most of the agencies they never go through the emails.(same thing happened to me many times)

2)    If you are selected and they call you for the interview on a particular date, then make ready your certificate in a suitable certificate folder and arrange it well. Make sure to get all the service letters and the certificates.

3)    Usually in construction field people don’t wear a tie. But it’s a plus point if you get dressed well and wear a tie which matches to the shirt. Your dress can make a difference. As I have seen in many interviews only few people cares about grooming. Whatever the company you work for, you should look like a gentleman to others.(I have seen some Quantity Surveyors wearing rubber slippers and t-shirts for the foreign interviews but as I see it’s not a good thing as our profession is respectable), before u go to the interview find some information about the country that the vacancy is for. Food prices, accommodation cost and about other expenses like electricity bills, transport cost. That is to get some knowledge about the background of the country. Find about the salary scales for Quantity Surveyors in relevant countries. From your friends and also from the internet u get a lot of information.(go hit google for information as there are many bloggers posted valuable information about this field)

4)    There may be hundreds of people for the interview waiting for their chances but never be afraid because most of them are not working as Quantity Surveyors, may be technical officers supervisors and even don’t know what kind of a job is Quantity Surveying. Perhaps some people u meet in the interview, they say that they have many years of working experience and also have a degree and may be you are not so, but if u lucky enough then you will be selected even you posses a certificate.

5)    Always try to get some information from other people who sit for the interview before u who are coming out from the interview room and it will help you to get an idea about the Questions that will be asked.

6)    If u feel something that you don’t know just use the internet to get some answers to those types of questions. One day I was asked about the FIDIC section which includes the variations, fortunately I got the information from a another guy who faced to the interview before me and I blogged it with my phone to find out the answer. Same Question was asked from me J

7)    When your Chance comes just go inside the Interview room and say Hi to the interviewers and they will start the conversation and ask you about the carrier and the family background first. After that, they will continue on the subject.

8)  For most occasions the Interviewers I have met they are from the HR or Personal Department and they only ask few Questions and expect a long explanation about questions. Never be afraid if you are cunning enough you can play with them as they don’t know deeply about the subject well. At the same time they ask you questions, they start marking our points in a paper.

9)    When they ask you questions, you also can ask counter Questions to get more time for you so as they are in a hurry to go for the other guy and they will end up the interview asking few questions.

10) Counter Questions means the conditions of contract that they use etc (that is to interpret them that you know the subject well), also whether they provide food and accommodation, transport, medical, air tickets, vacation period, contract period etc. remember even the agency guys mentioned that food and accommodation will be provided in their advertisement, you will get the exact answer from the interviewer.

11) Most important thing is the package that you are offered. If they offer you a higher salary, then accept it, if the package is lower, then think twice.  Always go for a package with SALARY+FOOD & ACCOMMODATION + TRANSPORT + MEDICAL + BOTH WAY AIR TICKETS, because your whole salary is saved for your future.

12) After facing the interview ask the interviewer that how long it will take to get a feedback. Usually it takes one week. Always follow up with agency guys because they don’t care much about feedback or they are not in a hurry like us. It’s better to always get yourself updated.

13) Don’t wait only for a one vacancy, apply for more foreign interviews.

Foreign interviewers come only for a day and mostly they have one round for an interview. If you are lucky enough, that day can change your life. THE MORE YOU PARTICIPATE FOR THE FOREIGN INTERVIEWS, THE MORE U GET EXPERIENCE ABOUT THE QUESTIONS THEY ASK.

To be continued with the procedure after selection from the interview -
